EXPERT IN THE FINE ART OF AUTHENTICATION

Authentication:  Investigating and establishing the fully, internationally accepted, proven and correctly underpinned certification of a work of art. Including those works with a specific signatorial claim, those with an earlier expert qualification of legitimacy, or those that have none. Requiring international academic and archival research and a variety of forensic applications and thorough in depth investigation.

Attribution:  Identifying and confirming the anonymous artist, studio or workshop from which a work of art first originated. One which may not have been previously known or formerly identified.

Revision:  Re examining and investigating an erstwhile ascribed historical artists attribution which is possibly incorrect. Or one that has been formally challenged.

Confirmation:  Conducting the archival research required in investigating and confirming the provenance, lineage and prior history of ownership of a work of art.

Scrutiny:  Identifying deliberate fakes and forgeries and determining those which may be studio or later student copies, or previously misrepresented or wrongful attributions.

Prosecution:  Investigating alleged art fraud and forgery and assisting and advising those prosecuting the fact.

Attention:  Conducting all art related due diligence and duty of care enquiries, prepurchase, or sale related studies and assisting in matters of consolidating future family distribution.

WHY IS THE  AUTHENTICATION  OF  FINE   ART -   PAINTINGS,  DRAWINGS   &   SCULPTURE  IMPORTANT ?

  • The investigation of a work of art's authenticity can identify any physical contravention of international law and attempts to deny the process of art fraud, therefore limiting the eventual success of criminality.

  • Art authentication is a critical measure in maintaining the integrity of art history and protecting its historical artists rights.
Included in this complex task, are the most respected artists in the world, Old and Modern Masters of European origin. Those who are amongst the most revered and well known artists in our history, including their followers and contemporaries. All are artists whose respective legal, intellectual, aesthetic and copyrights remain rightly protected under legal statutes.

  • The complexity and vast variety of practical applications involved with the investigations we conduct, are vital measures in the detection and prosecution of art fraud and forgery. As such, helping to enable society to sustain the ethic of honesty in our culture.

  • Art authentication therefore both upholds both the social and financial value of art and preserves the quality of aesthetics.

STEP ONE - THE  PRIMARY VIABILITY STUDY

The Pre authentication assessment

Old master

Art authentication is not about guesswork and certainly nothing to do with wishful opinion. It is a real and demanding world in which we live. One where there is no room for unsupported conjecture, wishful hypothesis and opinion alone. It surely will be challenged.

It is however, all about reality, gtting down to the truth and securing solid supportive evidence and proof.

Most normal human beings are naturally guided to us here on the internet by a dream and without a dream we would be nothing?

But it's a dream that what you have may just be something special after all?

It's a lingering hope that is easy to be beguiled by the magical possibility that a work of art may well be authentic? But you simply don't know if there is anything to it. So for now, it's only a possibility, but one that you may well believe to be true from the outset. Or what you have been told is true, or what you want to believe is true!

But remember, with art authentication, that dream has to be absolutely proven, just like a case placed before a court of law, as opinion is just not enough.

In a court room, any case must be proven convincingly before being judged. Effectively it has to be a case won without a shadow of any doubt and proven in many different ways: academically, forensically and evidentially.

Just like in a court case judgement, all of this has to be 'achievable' before the work of art can ultimately be pronounced as absolutely authentic.

So before you get into the authentication procedures minefield which can evolve with art legitimacy enquiries, one which may be both financially and emotionally taxing, it is more than wise to be realistic about the issue.
Have an independent and more importantly, unbiased 'preliminary assessment' conducted first, measuring and balkancing the viability of the work of art.

A pre authentication assessment is a professional study which is based on the realities. Balancing the viability of your work of art against its background and it makes an judgement of the possibilities. One based on our vast past experience that the case may be realistically followed through and eventually possibly be proven.

The advice you get will be invaluable and based upon the simple question;

Is there any substance in the notion that possibly this work of art could be authentic?

Can we diminish the risks involved and finally, do we have any serious or realistic chance of achieving our objective?

If any form of success in a project is not achievable, surely it would be sensible to know right from the start?

Such advisory, based on an unibiased assessment, then allows the client to make a wiser and more considered decision and apply a greater degree of sensibility in taking the leap into a staged, fully launched art authentication investigation.

It makes a great deal of sense.

Catching out a faker.

On the left is an image we took recently of two paintbrush hairs we identified that were embedded by the paint in a painting purportedly by the French artist Paul Gauguin.

You may notice that they are tubular in shape.

These are 'extruded' filaments. In other words, acrylic bristles and a man made invention of the nineteen sixties.

This was a fundamental error made by our would be forger, yet entirely missed by the new owner of the Gauguin fake. An unfortunate man who parted innocently with tens of thousands of dollars in the fraud.

Detailed Services Summary:

A detailed summary of the services offered by the Freemanart Consultancy and its wide variety of art and antiques authentication procedures follows.

Please navigate the buttons on the left of your screen (above) to learn more on each topic.

The clients relying on Freemanart, often specifically require the authentication and appraisal of British,  American, Canadian and European Art and Antiques. This level of workload would normally include the investigation, attribution and authentication of oil paintings, the authentication and attribution of water colours, the authentication of acrylic paintings, pictures and prints. We also concentrate on authenticating many different artist’s graphic works and which  includes; etchings, engravings, lithographs, mono prints, serigraphs, silk screen, wood block and limited edition prints.

Freemanart also employ experts whose area of expertise is in the authentication, valuation and appraisal of ceramics, pottery, figurines and furniture and collectibles.

In relation to three dimensional works and pottery particularly Picasso ceramics, there are a wide variety of authentication issues which currently surround the levels of fake and faux Picasso ceramic works which are available for sale on the market.

At Freemanart, our experts also value and investigate the authenticity of and appraise rare and antique books, bibles and first editions, maps, photographs, authenticate autographs and  drawings in pencil, silver point, pen and ink and charcoal. Coins, medals, stamps, postcards and private collections of all kinds.

Art Fakes and Forgery:

As Art and Antiques appraisers specifically specialising in the field of the authentication of paintings, pictures and antiques, we also aim to identify and investigate both art and document forgery, including fakes and art forgeries of all kinds.

To this end, Freemanart have specialists who specialise in the identification of fake and illegitimate works of art of all kinds and also forged, copied and illegitimate signatures.

Naturally, much of our work load is taken up with the authentication of paintings, but we also authenticate drawings, ceramics, sculpture and limited edition prints too, particularly those attributed to, claiming to be by or after Pablo Ruiz Picasso.

However, Joan Miro and Marc Chagall also account for a large proportion of our authentication schedule and the business of authenticating artwork. Particularly the authentication of artist’s signatures.

Our About Fakes section and archive specifically covers this subject with good examples of fake works by artists such as Picasso  http://wastefulness is also an excellent resource on art fraud, forgery, fakes and illegitimate art for interested parties. SONG
