 There have been some serious question marks left over many works of art previously attributed to Rembrandt van Rijn in recent years. Paintings that are now believed to have been painted by Rembrandt's students or studio assistants, such as Govert Flinck, Jan Lieven, Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, Philips Koninck, Reynier van Gherwen and Constantijn van Renesse.

 As a growing number of works associated with, or bearing the name of Rembrandt have been consigned for sale in major auctions around the world and as the values of his precious works of art consistently climb, there is an even greater need for the confirmation of legitimacy.

Any Rembrandt works that do surface will certainly require an in depth, comprehensive and thorough investigation of their backgrounds and similar scrutiny made for confirmation that any previously given attribution is correct. Or that any description of a work of art seemingly by Rembrandt Van Rijn or his circle can truly be relied upon.

 There were many followers of his style and equally, many student of the arts emulators creating product that is similar. So with such very high values of his paintings and drawings prevailing in the art market and the demand even for the most modest of works, then attempts at imitation by forgery at different levels is an obvious but sad consequence. 

 Often we see applied forged signatures, studio or collector stamps or a new and persuasive inscription. There are always added gallery labels to contend with and it need only to be one of a vaguely similar work of art to that of the artist for an attemt to be made to pass it off as legitimate.  These are the most common forms of criminal deception that we see and to complicate things, it's been going on for centuries.

of Rembrandt van Rijn. It is described as a

"finely painted masterpiece" by this master in Hofstede de Groot's classic work "Verzeichnis

der Werke der hervorragendsten holländischen Maler des XVII. Jahrhunderts". In recent times,

the piece has been reliably attributed to

Reynier van Gherwen - his pupil
