 Standing side by side with Britains greatest portrait painters of all time and seen as a serious rival to Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Romney was to become one of the most accomplished and successful of all English high society portraitists of the eighteenth century.

 Settling in the nations capital from his humble beginnings in Cumbria, Britains Lake District, with is eloquently covered in fine biographies of Romney's life by other commentators, Romney rapidly became successful, not only with his portraiture, but also painting his historical creations, his chosen field of painting as a career.

 However, studying the art of great Italian artists in Rome and visits to Paris influenced his style and with the huge demand for more of his now highly acclaimed and fashionable portraits a painter to be commissioned, his success was assured.

Recording literally hundreds of sittings each year, George Romney produced some 2,000 fine paintings during his elite career.

But despite this prominence as a portraitist of the mighty, rich and noble society of Britain, incredibly, Romney was never elected to the Royal Academy.

 It is important to understand the auction terms used in any descriptor and be cautious of works that may be painted in the style or even copies of his works which bear a signature.I n this case, George Romney.

George Romney ; The first name/s and surname of the artist. In their opinion it is the genuine authentic item, painted by the artist.

George Romney ; “Attributed to ….” That in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part.
