Russian Art Authentication & Attribution Investigations

Международные исследования аутентификации и авторства русского искусства
Astonishingly, in an art market worth millions globally, international art experts and authenticity specialists, estimate that as much as 80% of all Russian works of art offered for sale, are actually counterfeit and exceptionally well accomplished forgeries. However, at a different level, many such works of art, paintings in the main, emerge onto the open market, originating from the hands of minor European artists, whose paintings are subjectively and stylistically similar to historic Russian painters. These are innocently left unsigned and can be purchased at localized auction houses and sale rooms all across Europe. Far too often they are snapped up by unscrupulous buyers who add fake signatures to them, claiming that this is a newly discovered work of art by notable and eminent Russian artist. The most common form of art fraud we investigate. To make the existence of the newly found and long lost works of art more believable, fake provenance and histories are then conjured up. Many Russian fakes have also gained the added advantage of having been previously authorized as being authentic by formerly, highly accredited and well regarded Russian art 'experts' and some of them appear published in very questionable art books. As a result, for the past few years, Russia’s art market has faced its worst crisis of confidence in the post-Soviet era and we have been at our busiest. For many years there have been suspicions about the source of fake antique icons too, but sadly, this has become accepted as the norm in that specialized market place. Today, even the avant-garde works by artists such as Alexander Rodchenko, Malevich, Popova, Vasily Kandinsky and Goncharova, are attracting bigger and bigger prices at auction and are subject to faking and art fraud, but to an industrial degree. |
Fake suprematist compositions, as with targets like the Malevich above, ^ built up from simple geometric elements and easy to replicate, had begun to hit the art market in the 1980's.
Now its the turn of Altman, Ivan Bilibin, Ilya Chashnik, David Shterenberg and Udaltsova. Alexander Kiselev, Ivan Shishkin, Vasily Polenov, Feodor Vasiliyev, Potinokov, Alexei Jawlensky, Vladimir Orlovski, Alexej Harlamoff.
All are prime targets for faking as they command exceptional returns at auction. Absolutely none are safe. Many a fake Russian landscape start off as little known, pot boilers. Lesser known German, Düsseldorf School artists are prime as they were similar in many ways to the way some quality Russian artists painted. But Dutch, Danish and Scandinavian works, all bought at auction and at little cost will do. The fakers skilfully transform them, add their new signatures, into long lost masterworks which sell in the tens and sometimes hundreds of thousands. |
