International investigations and research into the authenticity of paintings, drawings & graphics by or attributed to;

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes

    The Spanish artist Francisco de Goya was born on March 30, 1746 and became court painter to Charles III, Charles IV and Ferdinand VII of Spain. In fact, nearly a third of the paintings that Goya produced in his life, around 160 in all, were fine portraits.

  Today however, there are serious question marks looming over many works of art previously attributed to Goya. Paintings now believed may have been painted by his students or studio assistants. Like most artists, he had an active studio with many assistants such as Asensio Julia, but there are other issues to contend with.

After Goyas' death in 1828, illicit followers of Goya' style tried to imitate his portraits and forgers created Goya-esque fantasy scenes to sell on to unsuspecting buyer collectors, flooding the European and American market in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

 The National Galleries Goya painting of Ronda lady, Doña Isabel de Porcel, for one was questioned, when a second painting was found underneath the portrait. A man in a striped jacket, that did not comply with his characteristic handling or style and is believed to have been painted later.

The Mets, 'Narcisa Barañana de Goicoechea' has recently raised some eyebrows too.

 And the long attributed to Goya; 'A City on a Rock' is now being attributed to Velazquez, but was formerly labelled as a '19th century concoction of Goya motifs by some unknown but obviously talented forger.'
Velazquez (1817-1870) Spanish was the most famous and talented of Goya's copiers and was believed to have made at least 700 fake Goyas in his career, including 'The Village Bullfight'

 Another fraudulent Goya stems from the prestigious Havemeyer collection, bequeathed to the Met in 1929. 'Majas on the Balcony' is in doubt, because the original is in hands in the Prado Museum in Madrid. But of the American philanthropists the Havermeyers magnificent collection, containing some 15 Goyas in all, only three of them are now regarded as authentic!

The Prado also believe that Goya's 'Colossus' was probably not painted by Goya at all, but by Asensio Julia, Goya's apprentice.

Agustin Esteve y Marqués, another artist prominent in the Spanish Royal Household and an artist called Leonardo Alenza, are known for perfect Goya copies.

And it's believed that Goya's son, Javier Pedro Goya y Lucientes, may well have painted the Black Paintings series, previously believed to be by Goya.

 The Fogg Art Museums oil on canvas, Portrait of a Woman - Maria Isabella de Bourbon bequeathed as a Goya, was proven to be a fake after forensic analysis confirmed the presence of zinc white paint, invented well after Goya's death.

 In recent years, a portrait of the Spanish artist Antonio Maria Esquivel purchased by two Spanish brothers as a Goya, sold to them supported by a Certificate of Authenticity which they trusted, (Mistake) was later examined by experts and declared a Goya fake as it was painted in the 19th century.

 The legitimacy of Goya's 'Milkmaid of Bordeaux' (Museo del Prado, Madrid) has also been called into question.

 We have seen a number of ink drawings in recent times that bear the famous name of Goya, previously sold through 'reputable' New York auctioneers and dealers in the middle of the last century. They are clearly NOT early Goya preparatory studies 'for' his prints, as was alluded to in their written provenances, but came 'after' the prints were made and became available for the fakers to copy..
