 Claude Joseph Vernet was one of the leading French topographical, landscape and marine painters of his time and there is no need for a secondary commentary on his life here as it is well documented.

 Hugely successful, his fine paintings often share similar compositions settings, balances and formats, though are uniquely different.

His workshop was prolific and the demand for works high, so it is important to be able to distinguish between and gauge the differences between works executed by him, those alleged to be by him, those replicated or repeated by his pupils or studio assistants, and those created by his circle or followers and at any period after him.

 For those who are intent upon deception today, they locate a vaguely similar, preferably anonymous painting or drawing, executed in a similar style and manner to that of the artist. Add to it, a copied signature or monogram, a forged atelier, studio, or auction house stamp, suggesting that it came for the artists studio sale, or add a new and persuasive inscription relating to it. Or a gallery label and the fraud is near complete.  This is easily the most common form of forgery that we encounter and it has been happening this way for centuries.

ABOUT A WORK OF ART DESCRIPTOR AND ITS TERMINOLOGY

  *It is very important to clearly understand the auction terms that are commonly used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be created in the manner of the artist, or those which could be variants of the artists works of art that bear a signature or monogram. In this case as if they were defining the creations of; Claude Joseph Vernet (Avignon 1714-1789 Paris) and his school, workshop or studio.

•  Where the name, Claude Joseph Vernet (Avignon 1714-1789 Paris), is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually cited as Claude Joseph Vernet (Avignon 1714-1789 Paris), including his dates to be specific, then in their qualified and professional opinion, they are in no doubt. It is a genuine and authentic item and one painted by that artist. This is usually fully qualified by its inclusion in any catalogue raissone, or by the guarantee of the opinion given by the appropriate and internationally recognized expert authority on the artist.

•  When the term “After….Claude Joseph Vernet"; is the term used, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original work of art either by the artist or another artist/ printmaker.

•  Signed - Claude Joseph Vernet; “Dated….” or “Inscribed Claude Joseph Vernet” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark ? however, indicates a strong element of doubt.

•  When the term 'bears signature', is used or the name, Claude Joseph Vernet is specified followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature of Claude Joseph Vernet/date/or inscription” Then in 'their opinion,' either the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
