  Jean Baptiste Greuze was an eighteenth century French Neoclassical Rococo painter, mainly producing genre scenes, portraits and historical paintings. He was an artist who, in his time was elevated to enormous success and popularity in France through his depictions of highly sentimental and melodramatic genre scenes and today many are often attributed wrongly.

Coming from anonymous hand,s some works seem suddenly to bear the famous Greuze name, or have been subject to earlier incorrect attributions. Particularly works on paper which are numerous from the period.

  The adding of signatures is a favourite ploy of illicit historical dealers and would be fortune hunters in the auction market. It was common practise to add a name to works of a similar time frame and types of all artists of note. With Greuze, sometimes hey were not necessarily even French by production.

 With his unique style of the period so popular and well imitated, both in his studio, circle of influence and mannerists that abounded, it is a simple task to bolster the price of a work of art from one of these sources. Any of which could have been drawn or painted by anyone and at any time after the artist lived, just by adding his name.

Good fakers too, start from scratch, using canvasses and paper of type and period. Choosing their subjects carefully and slotting the new work neatly into a known sequence of production by the artist.

Concoct now an elaborate and believable provenance, suggest it came though from a known collector, fake a few stamps and labels  and it's quite simple to draw in to the deception, the unknowing buyer.
