Investigating the Authenticity of Paintings and Drawings believed to be by or attributed to;

Pieter Brueghel the Elder & the Breughel Dynasty

Pieter Bruegel, also Brueghel or Breughel the Elder

1525–1569

Flemish

Also: Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564/5–1637/8 - Jan Brueghel the Elder

A Netherlandish Renaissance painter and printmaker known for his vast landscapes and peasant scenes or Genre painting. Pieter Breughel the Elder so called in order to distinguish him from his elder son, was the first in a large family of Flemish painters. Born in Brussels he came from an artistic background, his grandfather being Pieter Coecke van Aelst.

Breughal entered the studio of Peter Coecke, the official artist to the House of Habsburg, the royal court of Austria and became his pupil. However his life was short, dying at the age of only 45, having produced only an equal number of 45 known paintings.

His two sons, Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564/5–1637/8) who was sometimes called Pieter Brueghel II and his brother Jan Brueghel the Elder continued in the same vein and the Breughel dynasty grew and flourished.

Pieter Brueghel the Younger was first a copyist and made duplications of his fathers most famous works, such was the commercial demand. In all it is known there are over 60 copies that he made of just one painting of his fathers called the Birdtrap, (Winter Landscape with Skaters and a bird-trap.) Of which 10 are signed and four are dated. He lived on to be an elderly man in his 70's and is known to have painted over 1,000 paintings in all. Later in his career, he began producing original works but still on the same theme of peasant activity.

Pieter Breughel the Elder was a fabulously talented artist producing finely detailed, complex, almost vulgar and absurd works depicting peasants in ridiculous situations. He was man who set up a studio in Antwerp and became one of the first painters of still lifes, particularly intricate and elaborate flower paintings which were to become so popular in Europe as to start a whole new fashion.

Unfortunately, some of these later works created by less well known names and talent, often sprout a signature claiming a different originator all together.

The Breughel studio, workshop and attelier was both prolific and a very busy place, with many functioning assistants, students and apprentices alike.

The workshop produced at least 25 copies of Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s St. John the Baptist Preaching and about 30 copies of Adoration of the Magi in the Snow. Not alway exactly the same, some subtly different, some with variations and different compositional elements with additions and subtractions.

Some examples of images readily available on the internet tell their own story. Disparity is wide ranging.

ABOUT AUCTION HOUSE DESCRIPTORS.

It is important to understand the auction terms used in any descriptor and be cautious of works that may be painted in the style of the artist or even copies of his works which bear a signature. In this case the Brueghel family

Pieter Brueghel; Given the first name/s and surname of the artist. In their opinion it is the genuine authentic item, painted by the artist.

Pieter Brueghel; Described as “Attributed to ….” That in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part.

Pieter Brueghel; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of” or "attelier" In their opinion it is a work executed in the studio or workshop of the artist.

Possibly by an apprentice or pupil under the principal artists supervision.

Pieter Brueghel; “Circle of ….” In their opinion it is a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence, or closely associated with the artist but not necessarily by his pupil.

Pieter Brueghel; In the “Style of ….” or “Follower of ….” In their opinion it is a work of art executed in the artist’s style, but not necessarily by a pupil. But it may be contemporary, or nearly contemporary.

Pieter Brueghel; “Manner of ….” In their opinion it's a work in the style of the artist but of a later date and definitely not by the artist.

Pieter Brueghel; “After ….” In their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist.

Pieter Brueghel; “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed” In their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark indicates an element of doubt.

Pieter Brueghel; "With signature ….”, “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature/date/inscription” Then in their opinion the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.

We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
