Investigating the Authenticity of Works of art believed to be by or Attributed to

Johan Barthold Jongkind

  Johan Jongkind was a Dutch landscape painter who mainly lived in France and a precursor of the impressionists.
Known as "the painter of Honfleur and Paris streets", Jongkind firstly painted from nature the classic themes of his native country Holland. Creating paintings of scenes such as harbours, boats, canals, windmills, winter scenes with ice skaters, always in a realistic manner in continuation of the Dutch naturalists he followed.

  After settling in France, his works took in busy Paris streets and Normandy, influenced by the early Barbizon School's painters who he befriended. Then in 1862, Jongkind went to Le Havre with Boudin and Monet and each summer visited the Normandy Coast, staying between Trouville and Honfleur. With his increasing success and an artist, he was well admired in France as a painter for his works depicting sunsets, seascapes and moonlight, which were much sought after.

 All too often, works by minor artists painting in the Jongkind style emerge at auctions claiming to be his own legitimate works, having developed the recognisable Jongkind signature overnight, applied by some unscrupulous individual trying to convince us its an authentic painting by the artist. A sad consequence as the values of his works of art consistently climb. 

Signature addition, is the most common form of criminal deception that we see and its been going on for centuries.
