  In brief, B.J. Blommers' trained under Jozef Israëls who was a major influence on his work, paintings and watercolours which are generally images of farmers and of the fishermen in Katwijk aan Zee and Scheveningen. The difference being that Israels works were somewhat gloomy, whereas Blommers focussed on the brighter side of life, with contented families and children set in bright and comfortable interiors.  Such paintings of high quality were in high demand at that time and he had a prolific output and a comfortable style and so Blommers enjoyed immense popularity as an artist, particularly abroad in his own day.

  Today, particularly now that values have risen so high, it is very important to be able to differentiate between those works executed by him, against those 'claiming' to be by him and those replicated or repeated by others, either in his studio or elsewhere and indeed those works which were created by artists from within his direct circle. Then there are works to consider that were simply painted by his followers. Artists who produced similarly themed paintings in his manner, but who painted them at any period after him.

 Unfortunately, there are some intent upon deception today, who locate a vaguely similar, preferably anonymous painting or drawing, one executed in a similar style and manner to that of an artist and add to it, a copied signature or monogram, a forged atelier, studio, or auction house stamp, or put a new and persuasive inscription relating either to it or to a previous owner. A gallery label too can be convincing and soon the attempt at fraud is near complete. 

This is easily the most common form of forgery that we encounter in our work and it has been happening this way for centuries.

DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY

  *It is very important to clearly understand the auction terms that are commonly used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be created in the manner of the artist, or those which could be variants of the artists works of art that bear a signature or monogram. In this case as if they were defining the creations of; Bernardus Johannes Blommers (Dutch, 1845-1914) and his school & studio.

•  Where the name, Bernardus Johannes Blommers (Dutch, 1845-1914) , is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually cited as, Bernardus Johannes Blommers (Dutch, 1845-1914) , including his dates to be specific, then in their qualified and professional opinion, they are in no doubt. It is a genuine and authentic item and one painted by that artist. This is usually fully qualified by its inclusion in any catalogue raissone, or by the guarantee of the opinion given by the appropriate and internationally recognized expert authority on the artist.

•  When Bernardus Johannes Blommers (Dutch, 1845-1914) is used, or it is similarly defined as 'Attrib. to ' [abbreviated,] or Attribué à, or ascribed to, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. Yet it may be a contemporary, or nearly a contemporary of the artist.

•  If the phrase in the “Manner of Bernardus Johannes Blommers is used or is defined….” then in their opinion it is also only a work painted in the style of the artist, but of a later date and definitely not by the artist as named.

•  When the term “After….Bernardus Johannes Blommers "; is the term used, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original work of art either by the artist or another artist/ printmaker.

•  Signed - Bernardus Johannes Blommers ; “Dated….” or “Inscribed Bernardus Johannes Blommers ” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark ? however, indicates a strong element of doubt.

•  When the term 'bears signature', is used or the name, Bernardus Johannes Blommers is specified followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature of Bernardus Johannes Blommers /date/or inscription” Then in 'their opinion,' either the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
