One of the most prominent of all the leading members of the Barbizon school of French painting, Pierre Théodore Rousseau that we have enquiries about, is one of the most faked French artists next to Corot of that period. Dark and sombre some say, yet Fontainbleau south of Paris is indeed a dark forest to walk in and it was a favourite haunt of the Barbizon school members and their followers and there you have the problem. Determining if the picture you have is by Rousseau, of by a follower of his and its so easy just to add a signature, or just his initials which was common for him. That is often enough to convince someone that what they are looking at is a long lost Rousseau. In recent years an ever growing number of paintings bearing the name Theodore Rousseau have been consigned for sale in auctions around the world and as the values of his works of art climb, there is an greater need for the confirmation of legitimacy. Works of art that do surface will require both a comprehensive and thorough investigation of their backgrounds and similar scrutiny made for confirmation that any previously given attribution is correct.
