Amos Cassioli  Art  Authentication  Investigations. Before you begin

STEP ONE IN THE AUTHENTICATION  PROCESS IS THE PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF VIABILITY STUDY

We recommend well before entering into a full investigation of legitimacy or possible attribution of any work of art believed to be by Professor Amos Cassioli, his studio, students or followers, it is essential to consider the viability of such a venture.

So, with that in mind, we prefer to conduct a preliminary, professional pre-authentication assessment of the work in question for clients first. This is an important study and advisory, based upon the images you supply, the full details of the work of arts acquisition, history and provenance as is known to you and any previous research or analysis that you may have formerly conducted.

It's made, aiming to balance any obvious negative issues there may be, against the positive that become immediately recognizable to us and identify whatever risks or obstacles that may lie ahead in its futher pursuit.

It's a logical and cost effective professional assessment for which there is a modest set fee.

You will then be in a far better position to decide if the project is worth undertaking.

Professor Amos Cassioli  (Asciano, Siena 1832 - Florence 1891)

BIOGRAPHIC

Amos Cassioli

Under the tutorship of Luigi Mussini at the Institute of Fine Arts in Siena, Professor Amos Cassioli was to become a notable painter of historical and allegorical subjects, portraits and grand military works. Paintings for which he won great acclaim, achieving considerable international success with subjects from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and ancient Rome where he also studied for some four years.

Moving on from creating his very large fresos and battle paintings, Cassioli started to paint similar but smaller format subjects from his studio in Florence. Paintings more evocative of the daily life of the ancient Greeks and Romans who formed a particularly appreciated genre of the time.

His own pupils included; Giuseppe Cassioli his son, Gaetano Previati, Napoleone Boni and Ada Mangilli.

Today Cassioli's paintings are regarded as being highly collectible and inevitably valuable. But because of that success, many works that were formerly attributed to his hand, clearly are mistaken attributions. More so, they are most likely copies of his works and passed off as his own by the inclusion of fake signatures.

Other paintings, created similar in style, of age, fashionable and of similar subject matter, have also been wrongfully attributed to Cassioli. You only have to look at some of the paintings that have been attibuted to him that appear on internet auction sites, to see both the errors of judgement when attributing the author as being Cassioli, to others which simply bear a false Cassioli signature.

Here is one good example:

A Previous Investigation.

The Kiss by Amos Cassioli.
Alternative title(s): Il bacio or Paolo e Francesca - Painted in 1875.

ABOVE: This is a painting by Amos Cassioli, depicting Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Polenta's adulterous romance was inspired from Canto V of Dante's Inferno.  This very same subject in turn inspired countless other paintings by international artists including:

Marie-Philippe Coupin de la Couperie (1773–1851) French, who was the first to portray the scene which was presented at the Paris Salon in1812

Then came Louis Rubio, Italian 1808 - 1882  - The French artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, produced seven known versions of the Kiss between 1814 and 1819.

In 1854, G.F. Watts showed his moving first version of Paolo and Francesca at the British Institution and this may have suggested the theme to Dante Gabriel Rossetti famous work of the same title in 1855

At least 6 very similar versions were painted  by Ary Scheffer a French-Dutch painter between 1822 and 1855.

Then comes a string of other notable artists;

William Powell Frith - British 1819 – 1909

Christopher Williams – Welsh. (1873–1934) - William Dyce -British, 1806 – 1864 version 1837 - Sir Frank Dicksee, P.R.A. British. (1853-1928) his version painted in 1894. George Frederic Watts RA, British, born 1817 - 1904. Frederic Lord Leighton PRA British (1830 - 1896)

Anselm Feuerbach - German Finished his painting in 1864
Others: Gustave Dore (1833-1883) French - Gaetano Previati (1852-1920) Italian - Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) French - Francis Ernest Jackson (1872-1945 ) British - Charles Edward Halle (1846 - 1919 ) - Silvio Allason – 1890 Italian - Michaeangelo Grigoletti (1840) Clemente Albieri (1828) and Pierre-Claude-François Delorme (1825-1830) are but some who were so inspired.

Granted, they were not the same as Cassioli's own compositional vision, but others appear that were 'exactly' the same, or near enough to fool unsuspecting buyers!

One issue we face today with the authentication of fine art, is that students of the arts back in the time, were openly encouraged to learn the techniques from the masters themselves. A simple enough process by copying fine and highly regarded works of art that were publically displayed in museums and galleries. It was seen and accepted as being quite normal.

But suffice as to say, the inevitable happens when one of these copies then appears on the open art market. Typically and respectfully left unsigned at the time by the copyist, only to have a signature magically appear on it at some time, claimng that it now is an original work of the artist in question. Perhaps even 'the' original, like this original Cassioli Paolo and Franchesca, (illustrated above left.) Its own whereabouts lost for years until only recently emerging from time, to be sold at auction for three quarter of a million Euros.

However, to its right, is another  purportedly 'original Cassioli', Paolo and Franchesca kiss composition. This example though, a little different in its detail and purchased by an exceptionally well known and highly respected north American gentlemen around 1900. A socialite with both the wherewithall and the expertise around him to take superlative advice.

This painting has been passed on in the family and believed to be legitimate ever since. However, just like many paintings of its kind that we see and investigate, it bears a false signature, attested to by forensic examination.

Whoever did originally create this work, be it a student of the arts or even one of Cassioli's own students does not really matter that much. It now has a signature falsely applied to it, intending to defraud. And it did. Quite successfully, duping an avid art collector and his entourage of art experts around him 120 years ago.!

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail!
