Investigating the authenticity of works of art believed to be by the Italian artist

Amos Cassioli 

(Asciano, Siena 1832 - Florence 1891)

The first of the Tuscan portraitists.

  Under the tutorship of Luigi Mussini at the Institute of Fine Arts in Siena, Professor Amos Cassioli was to become a notable painter of historical and allegorical subjects, portraits and grand military works. Paintings for which he won great acclaim, achieving considerable international success with subjects from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and ancient Rome where he also studied for some four years.

 Moving on from creating his very large frescos and battle paintings, Cassioli started to paint similar but smaller format subjects from his studio in Florence. Paintings more evocative of the daily life of the ancient Greeks and Romans who formed a particularly appreciated genre of the time.

His own pupils included; Giuseppe Cassioli his son, Gaetano Previati, Napoleone Boni and Ada Mangilli.

 Today Cassioli's paintings are regarded as being highly collectible and inevitably valuable. But because of that success, many works that were formerly attributed to his hand are mistaken attributions. More so, they are most likely copies of his works and passed off as his own by the inclusion of fake signatures.

 Other paintings, created similar in style, of age, fashionable and of similar subject matter, have also been wrongfully attributed to Cassioli.

You only have to look at some of the paintings that have been attributed to him that appear on internet auction sites, to see both the errors of judgement when attributing the authorship to Cassioli, to others, which simply bear a false Cassioli signature.

ABOVE: This is a painting by Amos Cassioli, depicting Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Polenta's adulterous romance was inspired from Canto V of Dante's Inferno. This very same subject in turn inspired countless other paintings by international artists.

 To its right a variation from over a century ago, bearing his signature and sold through a notable dealership to a North American dignitary around the turn of 1900.
