We hear the same question very often from people enquiring about L. S. Lowry.

"Do I have an authentic Lowry or not ?"

 True enough, some legitimate Lowry's have emerged from deep in the shadows of time over the past few years, claiming to be long lost or forgotten Lowry drawings or paintings that now suddenly are rediscovered. But the notorious British art forger Shaun Greenhalgh was one recent British faker of art who created many a convincing fake Lowry painting in his illicit career emersed in art fraud.

 As indeed did another amateur artist called David Henty. He admits to selling hundreds of fake paintings claiming to be by different artists through his eBay site over the past five years, including dozens of fake Lowrys'. Here on the left below is a good and very well recorded example of his replica copy of Lowry's 'The Postbox,' bought directly from Lowry in 1965. The original sold at auction fairly recently or £165,000. Sufficiently different though and in lots of ways to the original so that it could not be misconstrued as the legitimate Lowry.

Q: Is this an authentic painting  by L. S. LOWRY or is it a  Fake?  >

The Canadian owners didn't think so after they bought the purported legitimate Lowry painting from a Canadian auction house. Painted on wood, this L S Lowry measures about 8 " x 4"

 The painting above is purportedly by the British artist Laurence Stephen Lowry - 1887 - 1976, but is it a Fake Lowry, or the real thing?

ABOUT LOWRY:

Laurence Stephen Lowry RBA., RA., is best known for his "matchstick men and women" and for creating paintings of people set in the industrial towns of the north of England, complete with factories, chimneys and smoke filled industrial landscapes. Stephen Lowry grew up in Stretford, now a suburb of Manchester, in England and most of his work portrays quite desolate urban landscapes and anonymous busy figures. Lowry as an artist was inspired by a strange ‘beauty’ he described seeing on the streets. Like the authentic Lowry above.

 Compare the painting of his figures in the work bought in Canada > to that of a detail from one of his known, legitimate paintings on the far right. You may notice something quite striking?

  Look at the quality of the painting in the detail of the painting on the left and you will see a distinct lack of clarity, particularly if you compare it to the precision displayed by Lowry with people and dogs on the right.
Now ask yourself a very simple and honest question. Is it really good enough to be by Lowry?

 Whilst some may say Lowry's work is childlike, Lowry's figures are still very well defined, full of clarity and character and certainly not just blobs of paint!

 Now take a good look at the construction of Lowry's signature above which is authentic and compare it to the Lowry signature on our oil painting from Canada on the left

Follow the actual construction of each letter carefully, left to right, up and down and then compare like with like. Which Lowry is right?

As you can see, the signature construction in our painting is VERY different indeed. Look closely at the S the W and the R and the  Y
