  Russian - French expressionist painter Chaim Soutine, originally from Lithuania, was one of the finest examples of artists from the School of Paris. Using thick vivid, impasto, bold brush strokes and significantly, always working from a visual model, not from his imagination.

Some consider his paintings to be traditional, but uncouth.

 But his paintings run in carefully processed series and he repeatedly used as his incredibly diverse subjects: gladioli, houses, landscapes, the fiancée and animals, including game and poultry. He also to painted portraits, trees, hotel staff and choirboys.

 The faker of Soutine creates a new work made to fit neatly into one of these sequences of previously known paintings. Using the same subject, compositional elements and colour palette to match. Then a well created, fictitious, but believable provenance makes for convincing reading and the plot is set.

 The creators of the Soutine catalogue raissone themselves are known to have rejected some mediocre pieces by Soutine as fakes and have challenged their authenticity in recent years.

 "A retired art dealer was blocked from selling 10 drawings by Jewish expressionist artist Chaim Soutine after the co-authors of the artists catalogue raissone told an art gallery and two major auction houses that most of the drawings were fake" March 11, 2009 CNN 

 Art faker Elmyr de Hory is known to have faked Soutine immediately after the 2nd world war and there are no shortages of currently available 'attributed to' Soutine oil paintings bearing a signature on internet auction sites. Each with estimates of only two to three thousand dollars and bids of only $250.00! When his works can fetch 20 million, I wonder if they are right?
