Russian artist and stage designer, born in St. Petersburg in Russia and one of  the finest of all Russian illustrators.

 Taking his inspiration mainly from Russian folk stories, (Russian skazki) early folk songs and fairy tales, the mountains and forests of Old Russia were dominant in his art.  His charming, accurate depictions of figures and historical costume were consistent and a unique Bilibin style emerged.

 Working using a combination of pen, ink and watercolour, he illustrated many Russian books and produced  designs for magazine articles and created book covers.  Amongst the most famous titles he illustrated were:

 The Firebird and the Grey Wolf, the Little White Duck, the Tale of Ivan the Tsar's Son, the Feather of Finist the Falcon, the Frog Princess, Vassilisa the Beautiful and Maria Morevna.

 Bilibin's rise to fame and fortune followed his acclaim and his original works were hugely sought after and are now very valuable. As a sad consequence, it is no wonder that the fakers, as always in tune to the rising values of his paintings and illustrations, soon cottoned on and the Bilibin fakes emerged. Often times planted in innocent auction houses, along with their fake provenance and histories.

  Works of art that do surface will require both a comprehensive and thorough investigation of their backgrounds and similar scrutiny given to confirm that any previously given attribution is correct. So too that any description itself of a work of art seemingly by Ivan Bilibin can truly be relied upon.
