  Johannes Molzahn was a relatively unknown self-taught Expressionist artist born in Germany in 1892, who eventually emigrated to the United States in 1938.
  Molzahn first modestly apprenticed as a photographer before turning his hand to painting, moving on into graphic design and advertising for the shoe industry. But he soon made a name for himself as a painter, as is testified to by German Art forger Wolfgang Beltracchi who admitted to forging many works of art purported to be by Molzahn in his illicit career as a faker.

 A Portrait of Oskar Schlemmer, originally painted by Johannes Molzahn in 1930. Schlemmer was a fellow artist and colleague of Molzahn who specialized in painting, sculpture and choreography and would eventually become a target of the Nazis in their campaign against entartete kunst "degenerate art" that was considered un-German or Bolshevist in nature. "In 1987 Loretto Molzahn, widow of Johannes Molzahn, paid a Berlin dealer DM 60,000 for a portrait her husband had painted in 1930 of Oskar Schlemmer. The dealer had acquired the painting from Wolfgang Fischer. The painting proved to be fake and the Berlin dealer was given a suspended sentence in 1998.
