Investigating the Authenticity of Works of art believed to be by or Attributed to

Bernard Buffet

 You may think that for someone who has only been gone for twenty years, Bernard Buffet is not as faked as many of his French contemporaries are. But sadly you would be wrong.

 I remember within a year of so of Bernard Buffet's passing back in 1999, meeting an Irish art dealer who needed some help with identifying an unsigned picture he'd just bought at auction. We met up in a West country pub car park and he showed me what he thought was a George Roualt unsigned oil, but he also had several very suspicious Buffet's in the back of the car, a little too fresh for my liking and still smelling strongly of varnish. However, they would soon be destined for consignment to small provincial auction houses in the UK, Canada and the USA.

I often wonder where they are now?

 In recent years an ever growing number of paintings bearing the name Bernard Buffet have been consigned for sale in major auctions around the world and as the values of his works of art consistently climb, there is an greater need for the confirmation of legitimacy.

 Works of art that do surface will require both a comprehensive and thorough investigation of their backgrounds and similar scrutiny made for confirmation that any previously given attribution is correct, or that any description of a work of art, seemingly by Bernard Buffet can truly be relied upon.

There were copiers of his style and equally, many student of the arts emulators creating product that is similar.

So with such very high values of his paintings prevailing in the art market and the demand even for modest works, then attempts at imitation by forgery and at different levels is an obvious but sad consequence.
