Investigating the Authenticity of Works of art believed to be by or Attributed to

Paul Klee

(1879-1940)

  Paul Klee was a Swiss-German modernist painter whose career included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. But he was faked extensively by notorious forger Ely Sakhai and also by the British forger John Myatt and no doubt many others who are less famous. "There are some artists who simply can't be forged, like Paul Klee" said Susan Partsch. "Because Klee kept exact records of his works from the beginning."

 In recent years, an ever growing number of works of art including paintings bearing the name Paul Klee have been consigned for sale in auctions around the world and as the values of his works of art consistently climb, there is an greater need for the confirmation of legitimacy.

 Works of art that do surface will require both a comprehensive and thorough investigation of their backgrounds and provenance and similar scrutiny given to confirm that any previously given attribution is correct. So too that any description itself of a work of art seemingly by Paul Klee can truly be relied upon.

 With such very high values of his paintings prevailing in the art market and the wide demand even for even modest works, then attempts at imitation by forgery and at different levels, from the excellent fakes to the patently foolish, is an obvious but sad consequence. 

 Simple ploys adopted by those intending to deceive, is to add a signature or monogram to an otherwise anonymous work of art, of a similar subject or style that of an artist. Often we see applied forged studio or collector stamps, a new and persuasive inscription, or an added gallery label on the back of a picture and the work itself and need only to be one of a vaguely similar type to that of the artist that is claiming to be by for it to be passed off as legitimate. Bogus provenance and even faked supportive documentation is not unusual.
Signature addition, is the most common form of criminal deception that we see and its been going on for centuries.
