Investigating the Authenticity of Works of art believed to be by or Attributed to Max Liebermann

"The art of drawing is the art of omission" famously said the German artist Max Liebermann. But the art of forging any painters works of art that command high prices is a crime. Max Liebermann, is influentially regarded as the German artist who first introduced impressionism to German art and his work is somewhat similar in many respects to the French Impressionist painter Edouard Manet and this sort of work of art is not that difficult to fake. Particularly when there are convincing fake provenances, concocted based on stories of looted and stolen works to support the credibility. Liebermann studied at the Weimar School of Art and under Eduard Holbein and Karl Steffeck and whilst living in Paris was hugely influenced by the Barbizon school, particularly Courbet and Millet whose plein-air painting was a new experience. But he also focussed his attention on the great Dutch artist Jozef Israëls for his inspiration. Subjectively, his paintings take in sporting events and intimate views of his garden which was enormously important to him. As were horses and riders on the beach in Wannsee, southwest of Berlin. He also painted many portraits of members of German high society and of course a number of self-portraits during his career. In recent years, an ever growing number of works of art including paintings bearing the name Max Liebermann have been consigned for sale in auctions around the world and as the values of his works of art consistently climb, there is an greater need for the confirmation of legitimacy. Works of art that do surface will require both a comprehensive and thorough investigation of their backgrounds and provenance and similar scrutiny given to confirm that any previously given attribution is correct.
