Investigating the Authenticity of Works of art believed to be by or Attributed to

Jean-Michel BASQUIAT

American Neo-Expressionist painter

 Jean-Michel Basquiat was an African-American artist  born in Brooklyn, New York in 1960. He began his artistic career in the 1970's, principally as a graffiti artist operating under the pseudonym of Samo. Rapidly rising to success in the 1980's, he was mentored by the highly acclaimed artist Andy Wahol. However, tragically he died prematurely from a drug overdose in 1988 at only 27 years of age and at the height of his artistic career

 There are many well recorded incidents, including claims and repercussions due to fake Basquiat paintings coming on to the art market in recent years and undoubtedly, as his art is set high in the art market league and amongst the most valuable and sought after art in the world, they will undoubtedly continue to cause grave issues for some.

 Unlike many artists of his kind, Basquiat painted on many things other than canvas. Supports as diverse as football helmets to tee shirts, radiators to car doors. In fact any found object that took his fancy could be his next canvas.

But there are a few things that the Basquiat art fakers either fail to do, or recognize that they should not have done in making their illicit Basquiat fake creations and these single out the good from the bad!

  Alfredo Martinez from New York, who fleetingly knew Basquiat from the New York Soho art scene, cleverly copied countless numbers of legitimate Basquiat works that he borrowed from friends in the early 2000’s, without their knowledge as to what his real motive was. But he also created dozens of brand new Basquiat fakes, even forging certificates of authenticity to support their legitimacy.

 In recent years, an ever growing number of works of art including paintings and drawings bearing the name Basquiat have been consigned for sale in auctions around the world and as the values of his works of art consistently climb, there is an greater need for the confirmation of legitimacy. Works of art that do surface will require both a comprehensive and thorough investigation of their backgrounds and provenance and similar scrutiny given to confirm that any previously given attribution is correct. So too that any description itself of a work of art seemingly by Basquiat can truly be relied upon.
