Investigating the Authenticity of Works of art believed to be by or Attributed to

Robert Motherwell

(January 24, 1915 – July 16, 1991)

American abstract expressionist

  The American painter and printmaker Robert Motherwell was a noted member of the New York School of abstract expressionist painters and an artist who flourished in the 1930's and 40's.

The New York group also included the notable artists; Franc Kline, Willem De Kooning and Jackson Pollock and all were and still are widely faked.

 In one well recorded art fraud case in 2007, a fake Robert Motherwell painting was sold as a legitimate Motherwell abstract work in Europe for over half a million dollars.

The issue is, we don't know how many more illegitimate Motherwell paintings there may be, or just how many works painted in the Motherwell style, perhaps by a student of the arts, or an amateur painter who wanted to emulate his work, that there could be in existence. These types of work in themselves may fool someone into believing they are buying a real Robert Motherwell painting, but a good quality fake with believable provenance, all be it also fabricated, has an even better chance.

 In recent years, an ever growing number of works of art including paintings bearing the name Motherwell have been consigned for sale in auctions around the world and as the values of his works of art consistently soar, there is an greater need for the confirmation of legitimacy.

 Works of art that do surface will require both a comprehensive and thorough investigation of their backgrounds and provenance and similar scrutiny given to confirm that any previously given attribution is correct. So too that any description itself of a work of art seemingly by Motherwell can truly be relied upon.

    Before you begin any authenticity, legitimacy, or artist attribution investigation, it is wise to have an impartial preliminary assessment of the viability of the project conducted first. One made to independently and rationally balance any negative issues there may be against the positive. You should treat this study as a safety net.
