 The Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico is one of the top 10 most forged and faked artists in history,

second only to Modigliani in the list of the most faked Italian painters ever.

  In time, Giorgio de Chirico would paint many near exact copies of some of his earlier works from his most important pre-war period, but backdating them and putting them on the art market as they fetched a higher price than his later works.

A scandal resulted in the 1920's with many collectors litigating when they realised they had not bought a so called 'original' work from such an important time in his career but a later copy.

 In the 20's de Chirico had moved away from his earlier metaphysical and surrealistic paintings, choosing instead to paint mythological figures such as gladiators, horses and even furniture. But collectors were uninterested in his change of style and he knew it.

With so few of his early works available and the popularity of his Metaphysical works in particular in high demand, de Chirico took it upon himself to accept commissions, reproducing many copies of his principal paintings for collectors. Today this causes considerable headaches for many scholars.

 He called these copies verifalsi, or “true fakes” and didn't see any ethical reason why he shouldn't duplicate his own work whatsoever.

De Chirico Forgeries.

 The Italian master forger, Renato Peretti, on his own admission produced around 1,000 paintings in his illicit career as an art forger.
Included amongst them were numerous forgeries of De Chirico’s work, as well as fake works pretending to be by Giorgio Morandi, De Pisis and Carrà.

 De Chirico style replicas were also forged by artists such as Max Ernst, Remedios Varo and Óscar Domínguez and bore similar signatures to de Chirico's, but are usually fairly easily identifiable by comparable study.
