 Vladimir Makovsky was recognized as the master of "small genre" paintings, with his favourite theme being episodes of everyday life. This lead him to be known as an artist-novelist with each painting holding  a complete story. Though he also painted innumerable portraits, Makovsky was a prolific artist, amassing about a thousand paintings in his highly successful career. Though it would seem that there are far more than he actually produced in his lifetime around the world!

 As the value of Russian art has escalated massively in recent times, with some works far, far exceeding their auction estimates, as can be seen by some of the examples set out below, it isn't any wonder why it's estimated that around 80% of all fine art emerging from the Soviet territories is fake. But frankly anything vaguely like the artists work, is fodder to be transformed into a famous Russians' masterpiece.   

But you will always know when it's always minus the quality.

 Undoubtedly, as can be seen, the beautiful intensely lit works of art that were created by Vladimir Egorovich Makovsky, achieve exceptional values at auction today,. But as with any artists that do attain high monetary values, this is sometimes open to both descriptor errors and historically incorrect attributions. Also, even abuse. With incorrect attributions being made today, either mistakenly, or deliberately devised to deceive.

 Unfortunately there is also traditional faking to contend with, most often undertaken by the addition of a forged signature or monogram to an otherwise similar work of type and age, but one that was created by an anonymous follower. An artist who is just painting similar compositions.

As if in this case as if they were defining the works of the artist;

  *It is very important to clearly understand the general auction terms that are widely used in a published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be created in the 'manner of' the artist, or those which could be variants of the artists works of art that 'bear an applied signature' or monogram.

•  Where the name, Vladimir Egorovich Makovsky (1846-1920) is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually cited as, Vladimir Egorovich Makovsky including the dates to be specific, then in their qualified and professional opinion, they are in no doubt, it is a genuine and authentic item and one painted by that specific artist. This is usually fully qualified by its inclusion in any catalogue raissone, or by the guarantee of the opinion given by appropriate and internationally recognized expert authority on that artist.

•  When Vladimir Egorovich Makovsky (1846-1920) is the term used, or it is similarly defined as Attrib. to ' [abbreviated,] or Attribue, or Atribudo, or ascribed to, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part.
