Investigating the Authenticity of Paintings by Alfred de Breanski Sr
(British, 1852–1928)
The British painter of Victorian landscapes Alfred de Breanski, senior, was born in Greenwich, which is a borough of London, England, on the banks of the River Thames. Environs that he loved and a river he would paint many times in his lifetime. The son of a Polish immigrant, both of Alfred's siblings were also to become accomplished landscape painters, Gustave and Julie Bertha. He also married a Welsh artist called Annie Roberts, so it was not surprising that their son Alfred Fontville de Breanski and his brother Arthur would follow suit. Alfred choosing to paint in the manner of his mentor father and uncle, but in a brighter and more fluid style, The key to Alfred de Breanski senior's painting, is dramatic light. A vibrant deep golden glow which emanates from deep within each canvas and it was light that was to bring him acclaim.

Softly falls the even light. Alfred de Breanski
|
In 1872 the young Breanski made his artistic debut by exhibiting his first painting, which he called Evening: Softly falls the even light. (The landscape seen on the left, now housed in Art Gallery of New South Wales,) which sold quickly at the Royal Academy summer exhibition to the Bishop of Peterborough. A more detailed biography of Alfred Breanski's life is available elsewhere on the internet and it is unecessary to repeat it here. Save as to say, Alfred de Breanski chose his subjects carefully, travelling to distant and sometimes unusual places, difficult to access. Thus giving him a unique and rare view of the region he studied and recorded. Wales especially, was natural haunt for Breanski as his wife's family lived there. Scotland too would be at the forefront of his life's work. But painting trips to Yorkshire, the Peak District and Cornwall all resulted in fine paintings from this most prolific of Victorian landscape artists. Meeting the preference for art in his time frame, animals often feature in his paintings, cattle especially. It is evident that the fine British artists who went before him, such as John Constable and J. M. W. Turner, had a profound and lasting effect upon his artistic career as an artist who had settled in London where he continued to paint along the banks of the river he grew up with and kept a houseboat. Lesser known are these fine examples of his work, but none the less warming and appreciated by his admiring collectors.

Fake Breanski paintings:
An issue commonly arising with identifying the authenticity of Breanski's paintings, is the reliability, or the legitimacy of an attribution to Alfred Breanski in the first place. Honest mistakes are naturally made, similarities to authentic works by Breanski standing out for the person making the attribution. But more devious attempts at deliberate fraud are commonplace.
The modus operandi: Take any reasonable quality British landscape that's an oil painting of age, one likely bought at auction provincially. They choose one that has mountains, rivers or lakes with cows or figures as its composition and either take off the signature of the original creator with solvent, or add a brand new one to an otherwise anonymous painting that reads 'Alfred de Bréanski'.
They don't chance pricing it too high, up in the £20,000.00 to £50,000.00 range that his paintings can make today when fully authenticated, that level attracts too much scrutiny and suspicion. But keeping it well profitable for the seller, consign it to an internet platform auction site, (you know the main ones,) where it attracts sight unseen attention from prospective buyers. All are looking for a quick profit and convincing themselves they've actually found one in this long lost Breanski that's just surfaced from the mists of time. Though somewhat foolishly choose American landscapes to try to fool you with, or even commercial furnishing paintings.
Oil paintings in the Manner of A de Breanski.
Or choose a better quality painting altogether. This time painted by someone who is obviously a British artist following in Breanski's footsteps. An artist emulating his style and manner and leave it unsigned, but go to the lengths of either putting a plaque on the front that gives us a title and a name, (this seems to be particularly appealing to North American buyers) or prepare a convincing provenance. They even go as far as forging an old receipt, dated previous written attributions from deceased 'experts', or labels and inscriptions on the back. Now it gets consigned to a local terrestrial auctioneer, one who is quite happy to confirm an attribution based on what he sees, or has been told and they include it in a sale. That gives it credence and its a sale which is usually aligned to one of the internet based platforms anyway and its off and running. It may not sell, but 9 times out of 10.....it does.
Step one in the Art Authentication process The Pre-Authentication Assessment.
Before you begin any art authenticity, legitimacy, or artist attribution investigation, it is very wise to have an impartial preliminary assessment of viability conducted first, made to independently balance any negative issues there may be against the positive. We are happy to professionally undertake that study for you as a safety net, based upon the images that you supply, all the known facts regarding its acquisition, the history and provenance of the work as is known to you. You will then have a far better understanding of the prospects and pitfalls that may lie ahead. See our FAQ's for details of the process We will respond to you promptly. |
