Investigating the Authenticity of Paintings & Drawings believed to be by or attributed to; Frederic Edwin Church
(1826–1900) Also known as: Fred Edwin Church, Frederic E. Church
One of the greatest American painters of the 19th century, Americans considered him to be the Michaelangelo of landscape painting. Church's specialism as an artist were the spectacular landscapes of North and South America that he created, though he travelled extensively to Europe and the Middle East and like Turner, these paintings were dramatic compositions full of incredible light. He first settled in the town of Hudson, in New York state, on a farm with magnificent views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains. The youngest artist ever to be elected to the National Academy of Design in 1849, Church became the principal figure of a landscape artists' group known best as the 'Hudson River School'. F. E. Church was the only pupil of the founder of the Hudson River school, the British artist Thomas Cole and Church's early works were in the main allegorical. Landscapes capturing history as well as painting the more traditional romanticised landscapes of the Catskil mountains and pastoral American scenes.
