AUTHENTICATION AKA; John Atkinson - J.A. Grimshaw - Atkinson Grimshaw British Victorian artist 1836 – Leeds – 1893
Predominately and for many years an underrated British self taught landscape artist born in Leeds in 1836, John Atkinson Grimshaw is perhaps best known for his sombre nocturnal scenes and city nightscapes. His moonlit and atmospheric paintings of misty city scenes, intriguing and mysterious country lanes, historic mansions and superlative autumnal landscapes are his forte. Working mainly in Northern England, he didn't become a full time artist until he married in 1858 at the age of twenty five, when Grimshaw gave up work as a railway clerk and began painting full-time. His interests lay primarily in the wharfs, shipping and docks and the cities of Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds, Scarborough, Whitby and London, though he did paint fairy pictures, social realism, portraits and still lifes. Often quite poorly emulated, as you will no doubt have seen, due to the vastly increasing values of his painting, he is very often faked. But there may just be works that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families for aeons that have never surfaced and that have not yet been documented. But today, it has to be said, some Atkinson Grimshaw works that do appear of the open market are misattributed, either mistakenly or more commonly, deliberately, with the latter application all too and obviously frequent. Simply by the inclusion of a copied signature or more commonly, a monogram, placed on a work of art of a similar type, style, or subject matter to his own paintings, or one applied to a previously unsigned or lesser work, even a student of the arts emulated effort, (where an original signature has been deleted,) it is no wonder that question marks can and do so often arise about the authenticity of some John Atkinson Grimshaw paintings. Confirmation: Undertaking research and investigations into the legitimacy of the provenance, history and prior ownership of a work of art and establishing its own accuracy.

determining works of art which may be studio or later copies, or previous incorrect

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY

It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of John Atkinson Grimshaw.
Where the name John Atkinson Grimshaw given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually John Brett, then in their professional opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, John Atkinson Grimshaw. John Atkinson Grimshaw, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion. When John Atkinson Grimshaw; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of John Atkinson Grimshaw "atelier" is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or even a pupil under the principal artists supervision. But if the term John Atkinson Grimshaw, or “Circle of John Atkinson Grimshaw” is used, then in their opinion, it is a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence, or closely associated with the artist, BUT not necessarily by his pupil or student.
