Francis Picabia 1879-1953

FRENCH

French avant-garde painter of Impressionism, Dadaism and Pointillism, but principally associated with Cubism.

  Influenced by the numerous and radical artistic movements happening both within Paris and abroad throughout his life,  Francis Picabia was born in Paris to wealthy parents, a Cuban diplomat father and a French mother and studied at the École des Arts Decoratifs and while there befriended the artists Georges Braque and Marie Lautencin.

 Typical of Picabia, known as an unruly genius, he created an incredible array of varied works as his shift in artistic interest and his ability to switch from one artistic movement to another every few years.

 However, Picabia is often quite poorly imitated, due to the vastly increasing values of his works of art and sadly variations of his paintings often are faked. It may be true to say that there could be works of his that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families for eons that have never surfaced to date and are yet to be documented, but it has to be said, some of the Francis Picabia works that do appear on the open market are either misattributed to his hand, mistakenly or more commonly, deliberately.

 Falsified works, by the inclusion of a copied signature or a monogram, placed on a work of art of a similar early type, style, or subject matter to his own paintings, or one applied to a previously unsigned or lesser work. Even a student of the arts emulated effort, (where an original signature has been deleted,) it is no wonder that question marks can and do, often arise about the authenticity of some Francis Picabia paintings.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY

  It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of Francis Picabia (1879-1953) .

 Where the name, Francis-Marie Martinez de Picabia (1879-1953) or Francis Picabia (1879-1953) is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually Francis Picabia (1879-1953) , then in their professional opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, Francis Picabia (1879-1953) .

 When Attributed to Francis Picabia (1879-1953) is used, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion.

 When Francis Picabia; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of Francis Picabia "atelier" is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or even a pupil under the principal artists supervision.

 When the term “After….” Francis Picabia ; is the term, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original..

 Francis Picabia; “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed Francis Picabia” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark however, indicates a strong element of doubt.

 When the term Francis Picabia is used followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature Francis Picabia /date/or inscription” Then in their opinion, the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
