Welsh painter, draughtsman and etcher

 The early period of his work is characterised by his exceptional drawings, notably of contemporaries, including his wives and sisters, as well as portraits in oils influenced by the Old Masters he so admired.

By the 1920s Augustus John was by far Britain's leading portrait artist, painting many distinguished portraits including those of; T. E. Lawrence, George Bernard Shaw, Dylan Thomas and Winston Churchill,Thomas Hardy, W.B. Yeats, Aleister Crowle and fellow-Welshman Dylan Thomas. In 1954, seven years before his death, the Royal Academy held a huge exhibition of his work

 Influenced perhaps by contemporary movements like the Celtic revival, Augustus John was greatly attracted to Irish tinkers, Normandy fisherfolk, and above all the gypsies. Although he continued throughout his life to paint occasional nude studies, flower paintings, landscapes and figure compositions, John became increasingly involved with portraiture, which forms the main body of his work.

 Often quite poorly imitated, that attempt at imitation is undoubtedly due to the vastly increasing values of his works of art in recent years. Yet sadly, variations of paintings claiming to he his, either deliberately faked or simply misrepresented and misattributed to his hand, be that mistakenly or more commonly, deliberately, do appear.

 It may be true to say that there could be works of his that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families for eons that have never surfaced to date, which are yet to be documented. But it has to be said, some of the Augustus Edwin John works that do appear on the open market need investigating to be certain of their creation.

 Falsified works, can be by the inclusion of a copied signature or a simple monogram, placed on a work of art of a similar early type, style, or subject matter to Augustus Johns' paintings. Or one applied to a previously unsigned or lesser work. Even a student of the arts emulated effort, where an original signature has been deleted. It is no wonder that question marks can and do, arise about the authenticity of some Augustus John paintings.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY

Augustus Edwin John

  It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of Sir Augustus Edwin John.

 Where the name, Augustus Edwin John or Augustus John is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually Augustus John, then in their professional opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, Augustus Edwin John.

 When Attributed to Augustus Edwin John is used, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion.

 When Augustus Edwin John; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of Augustus Edwin John "atelier" is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or even a pupil under the principal artists supervision.

 But if the term Sir Augustus Edwin John, or “Circle of Augustus John” is used, then in their opinion, it is a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence, or closely associated with the artist, BUT not necessarily by his pupil or student.

 When the name Augustus Edwin John is given; or Painted in the “Style of Augustus Edwin John” or “Follower of Augustus Edwin John is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work of art executed only in the artist’s 'style', but not necessarily by a pupil. But it may be contemporary, or nearly contemporary of the artist.

 If the phrase in the “Manner of Augustus Edwin John, is used it is defined….” Then in their opinion it's a work painted in the style of the artist but of a later date and definitely not by the artist himself.

 When the term “After….” Augustus Edwin John; is the term, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original..

 Augustus John ; “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed Augustus Edwin John” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark however, indicates a strong element of doubt.

 When the term Augustus Edwin John is used followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature Augustus Edwin John /date/or inscription” Then in their opinion, the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
