Investigating the Authenticity of Paintings and Drawings believed to be by or Attributed to; Myles Birket Foster
Birket Foster (1825-1899) British Engraver, book illustrator and watercolourist
It is written that without contradiction, the dainty watercolours of Myles Birket Foster, appealed to the majority of the British public more than the works of any other artist. In fact, Birket Foster produced scenes from nature with an exactness that the most uninitiated in art are able to understand and appreciate. Children and picturesque sunny country landscapes, rustic cottages and charming domestic scenes are what he is best known for. There are very few large landscapes by comparison to the huge number of paintings he created, as he nearly always worked on a small and detailed scale and there are only a random but select number of fruit and flower paintings which he loved to paint. Myles Birket Foster searched the whole of the British Isles for the ideals and pastorals he painted, especially the Northern counties and his native Northumberland, though he travelled often to the continent, to Brittany, the Rhine valley and to Venice and the Italian lakes. All held a great charm for him, even venturing as far afield as Spain and Morocco. Myles Birket Foster was born in North Shields in 1825, the youngest of seven siblings and displayed great talent as an artist at the very young age of five, later apprenticing as a die and wood engraver, perhaps giving him the patience and exactitude he was to display in his paintings. Foster was a great admirer of Tuner and Clarkson Stanfield and it is these artists who profoundly influenced his works. Preferring to work directly onto cardboard (Chalon-boards) which were very convenient to pack for his travels which he rarely undertook on his own, preferring the company of Edmond Evans and Robert Dudley, a fellow artist, he worked with a very fine brush with watercolour as dry as he could render it. Never using professional models for his work, his early stand-ins, relatives and friends all his other images are without doubt, all of those he met on his travels. Birket Foster was massively prolific artist, producing large numbers of direct commissions for his works and the majority sold were direct to dealers purchased straight from his studio. So popular he became, that there were often great rushes to buy works he had painted made by art dealers. It is said that Myles Birket Foster, never went anywhere without a sketch book in his pocket and thank goodness he did.
Quite poorly imitated, this often attempted imitation is undoubtedly due to the vastly increasing values of his works of art in recent years, with variations of paintings claiming to be his own, either deliberately faked or simply misrepresented and misattributed to his hand, be that mistakenly or more commonly, deliberately, appearing on the art market. It may indeed be true that there are works of his that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families for eons that have never surfaced to date and are yet to be documented. But it must be said, some of the Myles Birket Fosters' works that do appear on the open market will need investigating to be certain of their legitimacy. Falsified works, by the inclusion of a copied signature placed on a work of art that is just similar early type, style, or subject matter to Hardys' paintings. Or one applied to a previously unsigned or lesser quality work, such as a student of the arts emulated effort, where an original signature has been deleted. It is no wonder that question marks can and do, arise about the authenticity of some paintings.
We are international fine art consultants, specializing in conducting full investigations into the authenticity of works of art created by artists in all categories, all regions and from historical eras, alongside scrutinizing their provenance. ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY Myles Birket Foster
It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of Myles Birket Foster.
Were the name, Myles Birket Foster is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually as Myles Birket Foster, R.W.S. Birmingham 1783 - 1859, then in their professional opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, Myles Birket Foster. When Attributed to Myles Birket Foster, similarly written is used, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion. When Myles Birket Foster; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of Myles Birket Foster "or atelier" is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or even a pupil under the principal artists supervision. But if the term Sir Myles Birket Foster, or “Circle of Myles Birket Foster” is used, then in their opinion, it is a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence, or closely associated with the artist, BUT not necessarily by his pupil or student. When the name Myles Birket Foster is given; or Painted in the “Style of Myles Birket Foster” or “Follower of Myles Birket Foster is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work of art executed only in the artist’s 'style', but not necessarily by a pupil. But it may be contemporary, or nearly contemporary of the artist. If the phrase in the “Manner of Myles Birket Foster, is used it is defined….” Then in their opinion it's a work painted in the style of the artist but of a later date and definitely not by the artist himself. When the term “After….” Myles Birket Foster; is the term, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original.. Myles Birket Foster; “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed Myles Birket Foster” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark however, indicates a strong element of doubt. When the term Myles Birket Foster
is used followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature Myles Birket Foster /date/or inscription” Then in their opinion, the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
