Investigating the Authenticity of Paintings and Drawings believed to be by or Attributed to; Walter Richard Sickert, A.R.A.
(1860-1942) Painter and printmaker
Walter Sickert was born in Munich and trained as an actor before studying art and was to become one of the most influential and controversial artists of the 20th century. Some even speculated that Sickert was Jack the Ripper, perhaps due to his geographical location, dishevelled appearance, occupation and an irrepressible like of the dark and dubious. He often painted music halls and seedy lodging house interiors, nudes, naturally and had a great dislike for professional portraitists, though he painted many himself during his artistic life. A pupil of the Slade and then James McNeill Whistler in London, training which was particularly gruelling for him and with him, Sickert learnt to paint landscapes and portraits directly from nature. He went on to train in Paris where he became friends with Edgar Degas and many of the Impressionists. Degas was the one key element that inspired him to capture the essence of daily life in the city and Sickert wrote that his works should be like a ‘page torn from the book of life’. Sickert settled in London in 1905 and held informal gatherings of artists and collectors at his studio in Camden Town. These led to the formation of the Camden Town Group, whose members chose their subjects from the suburban landscape and modest interiors of the time but painted in bold colours inspired by the Post-Impressionists such as Van Gogh and Gauguin on the continent.
Almost inevitably, he is imitated today, with any attempted imitation clearly an attempt at deception. Undoubtedly this is due to the vastly increasing values of his works of art in recent years. But his style, like that of so many artists evolved and developed. Today, all manner of paintings claiming to be him, either deliberately faked or more commonly misrepresented and misattributed to this hand, be that mistakenly or deliberately, can appear on the open art market. It may well be true that there are some works that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families for aeons and have never surfaced, and are yet to be documented. But it must be said, some of the Walter Richard Sickert works that do appear on the open market will need investigating to be absolutely certain of their legitimacy or given attribution. Falsified works, simply effected by the inclusion of a copied signature or easy monogram placed on a work of art that is just a similar or early type, style, or the subject matter of Walter Richard Sickert paintings, or that are applied to a previously unsigned or lesser quality work, such as a student of the arts effort, where an original signature has been deleted and a new one added. It is no wonder that question marks can and sometimes do arise about the authenticity of some of his paintings.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY Walter Richard Sickert ARA
It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of Walter Richard Sickert.
Where the name, Walter Richard Sickert,is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually as Walter Richard Sickert, then in their professional opinion they are in no doubt, it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, Walter Richard Sickert . When Attributed to Walter Richard Sickert , similarly written or used, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But... there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion. When Walter Richard Sickert; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of Walter Richard Sickert" or atelier" is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or even a pupil under the principal artists supervision. But if the term Walter Richard Sickert , or “Circle of Walter Richard Sickert ” is used, then in their opinion, it is a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence, or closely associated with the artist, BUT not necessarily by his pupil or student. When the name Walter Richard Sickert is given; or Painted in the “Style of Walter Richard Sickert ” or “Follower of Walter Richard Sickert is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work of art executed only in the artist’s 'style', but not necessarily by a pupil. But it may be contemporary, or nearly contemporary of the artist. If the phrase in the “Manner of Walter Richard Sickert, is used or is defined….” Then in their opinion it's a work painted in the style of the artist but of a later date and definitely not by the artist himself. When the term “After….Walter Richard Sickert "; is the term, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original.. Walter Richard Sickert ; “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed Walter Richard Sickert ” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark however, indicates a strong element of doubt. When the term Walter Richard Sickert
is used followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature Walter Richard Sickert /date/or inscription” Then in their opinion, the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
