Samuel John Lamorna Birch, RA, RWS, RWA

(British, 1869-1955)

 It is unnecessary to give another full biography of Lamorna Birch's life here as it is well documented by other commentators. However, the short version is....he was born in Cheshire, England and was a self-taught artist, excepting a brief period of study at the Académie Colarossi in Paris during 1895.
  Birch first moved to Cornwall and settled in Lamorna in 1892, attracted there by the Newlyn group of artists and where many of his most famous pictures date and come from. He ended up starting a second group of artists based around his adopted home of Lamorna which he was so taken with that he adopted the name.

 Almost inevitably, he is imitated today, with any attempted imitation clearly an attempt at deception. Undoubtedly this is due to the vastly increasing values of his works of art in recent years. But his style, like that of so many artists evolved and developed. Today, all manner of paintings claiming to be him, either deliberately faked or more commonly misrepresented and misattributed to this hand, be that mistakenly or deliberately, can appear on the open art market.

 It may well be true that there are some works that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families for aeons and have never surfaced, and are yet to be documented. But it must be said, some of the Samuel John Lamorna Birch works that do appear on the open market will need investigating to be absolutely certain of their legitimacy or given attribution.

 Falsified works, simply effected by the inclusion of a copied signature or easy monogram placed on a work of art that is just a similar or early type, style, or the subject matter of Lamorna Birch paintings, or that are applied to a previously unsigned or lesser quality work, such as a student of the arts effort, where an original signature has been deleted and a new one added. It is no wonder that question marks can and sometimes do arise about the authenticity of some of his paintings.

  It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of Samuel John Lamorna Birch, RA, RWS, RWA.

 Where the name, Samuel John Lamorna Birch is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually as Samuel John Lamorna Birch then in their professional opinion they are in no doubt, it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, Samuel John Lamorna Birch .
