Investigating the Authenticity of Paintings and works of art believed to be by or Attributed to;
Edith Hume
(Nee Miss Edith Dunn) 'E Hume' (British B Truro. 1862 - 1906)
Edith Hume was a painter of genre and sentimental Victorian figure subjects and specialised in fishing, working, beach and rural scenes. Drawn to Holland often, from her London home and particularly to painting in fishing villages like Scheveningen and Katwijk, these were very popular resorts that attracted both visitors and artists from all over the world and almost certainly included Edith Hume. Choosing to paint very much in the manner of the Dutch artists of the Hague school, Edith Hume chose her subject well. Bright, commercially acceptable and charming 'peasants'. Fisher folk and inevitably children. This was a hugely popular subject in her time. Similarly, the Dutch artists Isaac Israels, Anton Mauve and Jacob Maris, Sadee and Scherrewitz painted exactly these kinds of subjects themselves, though very much in a more impressionistic style and perhaps a little darker. They also chose to depict their peasants working in the fields or on the sea shore as was more popular in Holland at the time. If we look at the Newlyn School in England for instance, with artists such as such as Stanhope Forbes, Walter Langley and Frank Bramley, the subjective similarities are obvious, but British, Yet she chose to dress her figures in more beguiling customary. Somewhat more picturesque, in a more fancy style that was preferred most by her artistic contemporaries such as Miles Birkett Foster and Helen Allingham in their own studies of the rural worker in Britain. In Edith Hume's pictures however, her figures, always look healthy, working away in an industrious manner and are above all respectable representatives of the rural labouring classes.
Impressionistic works today can be simply forged and indeed are and by simply by adding a signature, a monogram, along with a persuasive inscription, or the odd gallery label to a previously anonymous, often amateur work, this is the more common place criminal fraud we see every day in our sphere and it is there for only one purpose...it aims to deceive. With such imitation an attempted criminal deception, across the board, that simple addition is usually made to a previously unsigned or marked work of the same type or manner of the artist it is claiming to be by. Even earlier studies and preparatory drawings, and more early student type works claiming to be made in a much earlier time in the artists life also feature. Paintings however are sometimes deliberately misrepresented, sometimes just misjudged and misattributed to a particular hand. That of course can be either be an honest mistake, or an intentional ploy and it also can have been effected at any time, either in the present or indeed the past. Some of the believed to be Edith Hume works that do surface, may need a far deeper investigation of their authenticity to be absolutely certain of both the legitimacy, or that a previously given attribution is indeed correct. The provenance and history associated with a work of art also must ne scrutinized to determine if it is valid and sound. Or that any description of a work of art claiming to be by him is correct and can truly be relied upon.

No inference or question is made as to their authenticity, moreover they are a cross the board representational view of the types of works offered for sale at auction internationally, some of which will need to be understood and sometimes some will specifically need to be fully qualified and authenticated. |

detailed and often complicated inquiries, with multilingual capability, full international academic research and any
forensic applications that are required.
Attribution: Identifying and confirming
the identity of a previously anonymous artist, studio or workshop from which a
work of art most likely originated. Including the re-examination and investigation of a
previous attribution which may be incorrect, or the scrutiny of an attribution
that has been formally questioned or is currently doubted.
Confirmation: Undertaking research and investigations into the legitimacy of the provenance, history and prior ownership of a work of art and establishing its accuracy and legitimacy.
Scrutiny: Examen minutieux:Identifying fake or faux works of art
and forgeries, including any false supportive accompanying documentation and
determining works of art which may be studio or later copies, or previously given incorrect
attributions. Prosecution: Poursuite: Investigating alleged art fraud and forgery and assisting and advising those who
are currently , or may be considering litigating or prosecuting the fact. This includes
colleagues who are legal professionals and individual private clients. Attention: Conducting all fine art related due diligence and duty of care inquiries. Including safe prepurchase or sale related audits and assisting clients in consolidating a well balanced future family distribution.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND AUCTION TERMINOLOGY
It is important to clearly understand auction terms that are used in any published descriptor, in order to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of her works which bear a signature or monogram. In this case if they were defining the paintings and drawings of the British artist Edith Hume.
Where the name, Edith Hume is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually cited as Edith Hume, then in their qualified and professional opinion they are in no doubt, it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist. When Attributed to Edith Hume, or it is similarly written or used as ascribed to or Attrib, [abbreviated,] or ascribed to, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But... there is no guarantee. It is only an opinion. When Edith Hume; with the term “School of, or Studio of ….” or “Workshop of Edith Hume" or atelier of Edith Hume " is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or a pupil under the principal artists supervision and guidance. But if the term Edith Hume circle of, or “Circle of Edith Hume” is specifically used, then in their opinion, it is a work only of the period of the artist, but showing his influence, or someone closely associated with the artist, BUT not necessarily by his pupil or student. When the name is given thus; Painted in the “Style of Edith Hume ” or “Follower of Edith Hume is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work of art executed only in the artist’s way, their 'style', but not necessarily by a pupil. Yet it may be acontemporary, or nearly contemporary of the artist. If the phrase in the “Manner of Edith Hume is used or is defined….” then in their opinion it is also only a work painted in the style of the artist, but of a later date and definitely not by the artist. When the term “After….Edith Hume "; is the term used, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original work of art either by the artist or another artist/ printmaker. Signed - Edith Hume ; “Dated….” or “Inscribed Edith Hume ” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark ? however, indicates a strong element of doubt. When the term 'bears signature',
is used or the name, Edith Hume is specified followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature of Edith Hume /date/or inscription” Then in 'their opinion,' the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
