A brief history of art in Tennessee.
Tennessee landscapes were perhaps the earliest art of preference in the State and in general were topographical views, in reality, portraits of places. But Tennessee sported a large number of fine premier portraitists too and also miniature portrait painters abounded. But the first inhabitants of Tennessee to have their portraits painted were, surprisingly Cherokee Indians from the Overhill towns, such as Standing Turkey ( know as Cune Shote) below.
Many artists who travelled here to Tennessee, came to paint landscapes including Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, the Frenchman who drew sketches of the Mississippi and Cumberland Rivers in 1828 and 1832. But the greatest of all Tennessee panoramic landscape artist was arguably James Cameron who arrived in Knoxville and then Chattanooga shortly before the Civil War and an illusive artist called James Wagner of whom there is little or nothing known today.

The subjects of Tennessee portraits were wide ranging but included Tennessee Governors, Masters of the Grand Masonic Lodge, Confederate and some Union generals. The principals of colleges, Directors and presidents of banks and foundations, as well as individual wealthy capitalists and professionals. But the Civil War virtually ended the art market in Tennessee and many of her artists either seriously struggled to survive, or just faded away. But with the war behind them, now for the very first time, Tennessee suddenly had a market for still lifes and “Negro studies,” such as those completed by Carl Gutherz after his return to the State from Paris in 1873 and landscape and genre painting in the French Barbizon school style became highly fashionable. There was also a growth in the popularity of genre painting and in particular, historical genre painting such as those painted by Gilbert Gaul, the first Tennessee artist of stature who did not paint portraits at all. Scenes from early Tennessee history became popular.
The Overmountain men Another transformation in Tennessee art was the radical emergence of the professional woman artist in Tennessee. Lead by Adelia Lutz, who had trained in France and settled in Knoxville to begin a career painting portraits, landscapes and flowers, particularly hollyhocks. Impressionism followed.

The Art Authentication Process - before you begin
Before entering into a full investigation of authenticity or legitimacy, it is essential to know if the project is viable enough for you to justify that pursuit. Logically, if it is not, you should not attempt it. So before you start, we prefer to conduct a preliminary professional pre-authentication assessment for clients first. This is a well reasoned, independent study and one based upon your images you supply and all the known details of its acquisition, provenance and history. In our experience, it is a vitally important study and your safety net, that allows for a balanced and rational measure of the risks, facts and requirements that may lie ahead.
