Investigating & Confirming the Authenticity & Attributions of Works of Art believed to be by: Giorgio Morandi
Italian (1890 - 1964)
Regarded as the greatest of all the modern Italian still life painters of his time, Giorgio Morandi chose to paint in muted colours for his favourite subjects. They were the simple and most unremarkable everyday objects, such as anything that could be found in the kitchen. This included bottles and pitchers, jars, bowls, vases, jugs and sometimes boxes. In recent times, the value of Giorgio Morandis' art has soared and vastly increased, with some works massively exceeding their auction estimates and most flying into the realms of the high hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars. As with any artists works that do attain and retain such high monetary values, this is sometimes open to both descriptor errors and historically incorrect attributions. But it is also open to abuse, with incorrect attributions being made either mistakenly, or deliberately devised to deceive. Any attribution that is given to an artist, should be examined very carefully in order to verify that the quality and accuracy of that assignment to his name is well established and rightfully ascribed. Confirming that it is specifically accurate, well researched and a credible academic attribution is essential and should not be taken lightly. Some attributors inevitably will guess, whilst others rely on a label or brass plaque with a name on which they base their assumption and think it is reason enough to make that statement. But as fine art consultants, we often encounter faking, particularly when an artist is easy to emulate and these are commonly produced to be sold using online and poorly policed auction sites, or through small provincial auction houses. There are other fakes that appear, made simply by the addition of a forged signature or monogram which is added to an otherwise similar work of art. It only has to be one commensurate to the type he produced and of a similar age to that of the artist it is claiming to be by. But inevitably, it will be one that was actually created by an anonymous follower of the painter, in hi style and it is useful to recognize, that form of deception has been going on for centuries and is the most common form of art fraud we see. One should always keep in mind, that any attribution, no matter at what level of credibility or status it comes from, is still only an opinion. It is a matter of personal interpretation and judgement as to how you view and respect it.
To understand the generally observed and well accepted semantics that are used in auction descriptions, they are set out further down this page. They define exactly what the expert view of the work being offered is and they also have a distinct bearing on the financial outcome. ***

Conducting Fine Art Authentication & Attribution Investigations
![]()
The duration and the direction of any authenticity investigation or inquiry into an attribution of a work of art, will inevitably vary from project to project. But there are clear and very well defined expert professional formalities, responsibilities and areas of scrutiny that we can formally assist you with. These include:
|
Step one in the Art Authentication and Attribution process. The Pre-Authentication Assessment
We strongly advise clients before embarking on a full investigation of legitimacy or an artist or studio attribution inquiry, that it is always wise to engage us to undertake an impartial preliminary assessment conducted first. One made to balance any issues that may be present that could make the longer term exercise unviable. This is a professional advisory service that we provide, based upon the images you supply, the full details of work of arts acquisition, its history and provenance as is known to you, along with sight of any documentation, previous research or analysis that you may have had formerly conducted on it. You should then have a far better understanding of both the prospects or any pitfalls we might face, before making a decision. This is a logical and cost effective professional review and advisory for which there is a modest set fee. Our FAQ section covers this in more detail.
We will respond to you promptly.
* ABOUT A WORK OF ARTS DESCRIPTOR AND ITS TERMINOLOGY * As if in this case as if they were defining the works of the artist; Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) Italian
*It is very important to clearly understand the general auction terms that are widely used in a published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be created in the 'manner of' the artist, or those which could be variants of the artists works of art that 'bear an applied signature' or monogram.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
