 Here is a remarkable artist, who even during his lifetime was being faked, much to his own annoyance. With one famous forgery that was also dated that would have seen him painting marvellous elegant portraits at 10 years of age were it to be right.

To date, experts have identified at least three different hands whose works are being passed off as Laszlo originals.

 Without question, his fine, polished and sought after works of art fetch exceptionally high prices at auction today and some considerably outstrip their auction estimates as will be seen below. But as with all artists that achieve high monetary values, this is clearly open to descriptor mistakes, historically incorrect attributions and sometimes even abuse, by incorrect attributions being made today. Either honestly but mistakenly made, or deliberately devised to deceive. But there is also straightforward faking to contend with, most often undertaken by the addition of a forged signature or monogram to an otherwise similar work of type and of age, but one that was created by an anonymous follower.

 It is important as well as useful to understand fully the generally observed and accepted semantics used in auction descriptions, (set out further down this page) This defines exactly what the expert view of the work offered is, and it also can drastically alter the financial outcome.

Including the re-examination and investigation of a previous attribution which may be incorrect, or the scrutiny of an attribution that has been formally questioned or is currently formally doubted.
