Confirming the Authenticity & Attributions of Works of Art believed to be by:
Herman Saftleven the Elder
(ROTTERDAM 1609 - 1685 UTRECHT) DUTCH Painter, draughtsman and engraver,
Herman Saftlevens paintings, principally of river views with castles and his fine drawings of realistic landscapes, made him one of the best known Dutch artists in the seventeenth century. From about 1650 onwards he mainly concentrated on painting imaginary Rhine land views with topographically accurate hilly or rocky landscapes. These were often tinged in a mist like blue and dotted with tiny figures. He collaborated on many works with his brother Cornelis Saftleven.
Without question, his works of art are highly sought after, fetching exceptionally high prices at auction today and some considerably outstrip their auction estimates. But as with all artists works that achieve high monetary values, this is clearly open to both honestly made descriptor errors, deliberately misrepresented claims, historically incorrect attributions and sometimes abuse, by incorrect attributions being made today. These too can be simply be mistakenly made, or deliberately devised to deceive. Then also there are the highly accurate, well researched and credible academic attributions. It is a matter of personal interpretation and judgement as to how you judge them. As I have said many times, there is also
straightforward faking to deal with, most often undertaken by the
addition of a forged signature or monogram added to an otherwise similar
work that is of type and of age to the artist it is claiming to be by,
but one that was actually created by an anonymous follower of the
artist. It is important as well as useful to understand fully the generally observed and accepted semantics used in auction descriptions, (set out further down this page) This defines exactly what the expert view of the work offered is, and it also can drastically alter the financial outcome. ***

![]()

But there are clear and very well defined expert professional formalities, responsibilities and areas of scrutiny that we can formally assist you with. These include:
|
Step one in the Art Authentication and Attribution process. The Pre-Authentication Assessment
We strongly advise clients before embarking on a full investigation of legitimacy or an artist or studio attribution inquiry, that it is always wise to engage us to undertake an impartial preliminary assessment conducted first. One made to balance any issues that may be present that could make the longer term exercise unviable. This is a professional advisory service that we provide, based upon the images you supply, the full details of work of arts acquisition, its history and provenance as is known to you, along with sight of any documentation, previous research or analysis that you may have had formerly conducted on it. You should then have a far better understanding of both the prospects or any pitfalls we might face, before making a decision. This is a logical and cost effective professional review and advisory for which there is a modest set fee. Our FAQ section covers this in more detail.
We will respond to you promptly.
* ABOUT A WORK OF ARTS DESCRIPTOR AND ITS TERMINOLOGY * As if in this case as if they were defining the works of the artist; Herman Saftleven (1609 - 1685) Dutch
*It is very important to clearly understand the general auction terms that are widely used in a published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be created in the 'manner of' the artist, or those which could be variants of the artists works of art that 'bear an applied signature' or monogram.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters. |
