Confirming the Authenticity & Attributions of Works of Art believed to be by:
Antonio Balestra (Baleste) & Workshop
(Verona 1666-1740 Verona) Italian
Balestra was trained in Verona with Giovanni Ceffis, then in Venice itself from 1687 with Antonio Bellucci, finally in Rome with Carlo Maratta from 1690 and in Naples from 1694. He was an artist who united typical Baroque classicism with bright Venetian colour, bringing about a new life to north Italian painting Principally active in Venice, he was a Rococo painter of mythological and portrait pictures. Though many works that he carried out in the first decade of the eighteenth century were religious commissions, such as large altar paintings and ceilings he also had many private patrons such as the Cornaro family. Highly regarded and respected by his peers and contemporaries, in 1725 he was unanimously nominated a member of the Accademia di S. Luca. Luigi Lanzi, the Italian art historian and archaeologist documented him towards the end of the 18th century and wrote: “Antonio Balestra is considered very polished, deep in drawing, easy with the brush, happy and cheerful, but with firm genius which makes you respect him.”
Any attribution that is given to an artist or their workshop, should be examined carefully to verify that the quality and accuracy of that assignment is well established and rightfully ascribed. Confirming that it is specifically accurate, well researched and a credible academic attribution that is made to a possible author is essential and should not be taken lightly. As with all important artists works that can achieve high financial values, this is open to both honestly made attribution errors and deliberately misrepresented claims. There can be historically incorrect attributions to consider and sometimes abuse, by false attributions being made today, some deliberately devised to deceive. So one should always remember, that an attribution is still only an opinion. It is a matter of personal interpretation and judgement as to how you respect it. As fine art consultants, we often encounter faking, usually undertaken by the addition of a forged signature or monogram added to an otherwise similar work of art, that is commenurate to the type and of the age to that of the artist it is claiming to be by. Inevitably it will one that was actually created by an anonymous follower of the painter and it is useful to recognise, that form of deception has been going on for centuries. To understand the generally observed and well accepted semantics that are used in auction descriptions, they are set out further down this page. They define exactly what the expert view of the work being offered is and they also have a distinct bearing on the financial outcome.

|
Step one in the Art Authentication and Attribution process. The Pre-Authentication Assessment
We strongly advise clients before embarking on a full investigation of legitimacy or an artist or studio attribution inquiry, that it is always wise to engage us to undertake an impartial preliminary assessment conducted first. One made to balance any issues that may be present that could make the longer term exercise unviable. This is a professional advisory service that we provide, based upon the images you supply, the full details of work of arts acquisition, its history and provenance as is known to you, along with sight of any documentation, previous research or analysis that you may have had formerly conducted on it. You should then have a far better understanding of both the prospects or any pitfalls we might face, before making a decision. This is a logical and cost effective professional review and advisory for which there is a modest set fee. Our FAQ section covers this in more detail.
We will respond to you promptly.
* ABOUT A WORK OF ARTS DESCRIPTOR AND ITS TERMINOLOGY * As if in this case as if they were defining the works of the artist; Antonio Balestra (1666-1740) Italian
*It is very important to clearly understand the general auction terms that are widely used in a published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be created in the 'manner of' the artist, or those which could be variants of the artists works of art that 'bear an applied signature' or monogram.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
