Choosing Paris to celebrate in his bright and colourful watercolour paintings, Jean Dufy pictured its monuments, buildings, parklands and boulevards from hugely creative perspectives. He tackled the opera, the orchestra, concert halls, the circus and horse racing with equal amounts of drama. His carefully imagined paintings are prized by collectors today, but as with all artists whose works regularly fetch high monetary values at auction, many well exceeding their auction estimates, there are sometimes descriptor errors to identify and historically incorrect attributions to investigate and occasionally deliberately made wrongful attributions that need to be addressed and corrected that may have been historically made to deceive with some only coming to light after careful scrutiny and research. There are many differing varieties and levels of forgery that we encounter in our workload. Most commonly it is undertaken by the addition of a fake signature or monogram applied to an otherwise similar work of art to that of the artist it claims to be by. The painting or drawing usually one of a comparable type, subject and of reasonable age, but one that was created by an anonymous follower. (An artist who was painting in the style of that artist.) Unfortunately, this form of fraud has been going on in the art world for centuries and makes the task of investigating a given attribution or underpinning a work of arts authenticity an involved and complex responsibility. It is important to understand fully the generally observed and accepted semantics used in auction descriptions, (set out further down this page) This defines exactly what the expert view of the work offered is and it also can drastically alter the financial outcome. ***
