 Paul Gustav Fischer was a Danish painter who gained great popularity as a painter of cities such as Copenhagen, but also for his busy social scenes and gatherings with people going about their daily duties in differing parts of Scandinavia, as well as in Italy and Germany. He also painted bright, sunny bathing scenes and some portraits.

His carefully created oil paintings are prized by collectors today, but as with all artists whose works regularly fetch high monetary values at auction, many well exceeding their auction estimates, there are sometimes descriptor errors and historically incorrect attributions to evaluate and balance and occasionally abuse to contend with. Wrongful attributions that may need to be fully investigated and addressed, some deliberately made to deceive and which only come to light with detailed scrutiny and research.

There are many differing varieties and levels of forgery that we see, most commonly undertaken by the addition of a fake signature or monogram applied to an otherwise similar work of art to that of the artist it claims to be by. It's usually one of a comparable type, subject and is of reasonable age, but one that was created purely by an anonymous follower. An artist who was painting in the style of that artist. Unfortunately, this has been going on in the art world for centuries and makes our work of investigating a given attribution or underpinning a work of arts authenticity complex.

It is important and very useful to understand the generally observed and accepted semantics used in auction descriptions, (set out further down this page) as this defines exactly what the expert view of the work offered is and it also can drastically alter the financial outcome.
