The Pre-Authentication Assessment: Your Essential First Step

At The Freemanart Consultancy, we serve a diverse and international clientele who turn to us for expert help and advice with matters of art authentication. Our clients range from private individuals—perhaps someone who has inherited a work of art, or a collector who has recently discovered something special at a sale or auction—to major international corporate entities. This includes:

  • Auctioneers
  • Principal Institutions such as National and Regional Museums and Art Galleries
  • Members of the Legal profession
  • Law enforcement agencies
  • Insurers and Loss adjusters

          And many others.

With nearing five decades of international experience, we've learned that meticulous preliminary assessment is key for all these clients.

We never offer 'off-the-cuff' opinions. Instead, our initial Preliminary Viability Study is designed to provide a clear, informed perspective before you commit to a more extensive level of research or investigation, ensuring we approach your work of art with the seriousness and expertise it deserves, balancing all known factors.

How Our Viability Study Works

  1. Your Initial Information: You provide us with all the relevant details you have concerning your work of art. This includes its history, any existing documentation, and the circumstances surrounding its acquisition. Please note: As outlined in our communications, we do not accept unsolicited images at this stage due to security protocols.

  2. Our Expert Review: We conduct a thorough, desk-based analysis of the information you've supplied. This includes an initial cross-reference with our extensive archives and research facilities, drawing on our unparalleled access to International, British and European Old and Modern Masters' records.

  3. Balancing the Evidence: This study is designed to weigh the positive aspects that support your work of art's potential authenticity against any questionable issues or 'red flags' that might hinder a positive outcome in the longer term. This is all about giving you a realistic, expert-driven overview.

  4. Your Informed Decision: The outcome of this preliminary assessment will provide you with an expert advisory opinion on the viability of proceeding with further research or a full authentication or legitimacy investigation. This enables you to make a fully informed decision about your next steps, saving you potential time, effort, and expense.

Your Personal Safety Net

We understand just how important your work of art is to you. That's why this Viability Study is offered as a dedicated, preliminary assessment. It's an essential safeguard, helping you understand the potential pathways and the challenges associated with your art work, all delivered with the professional discretion and expertise that The Freemanart Consultancy is known for.

Why a Preliminary Viability Study Makes Sense

Right from the start, you need to know if there's sufficient merit in progressing with a full investigation into legitimacy, or if there are simply too many issues or obstacles to contend with, meaning you'd be best advised to proceed no further than this.

So, if you're seriously considering having any work of art investigated to unconditionally establish its authenticity and finally obtain an internationally recognised and fully accepted, correctly certified acknowledgement of its legitimacy, then you'll be well advised to have a complete and properly proven, well-prepared case. Much like you would if you were presenting a case to a judge and jury in a court of law for their consideration and determination.

That is why we strongly advise all our prospective clients that, before you move ahead with a full investigation of a work of art's authenticity—or if you are seeking the identification and confirmation of an attribution to a particular artist or studio, or even if you need to get a better and firmer understanding that something is not what it claims to be (for instance, before you buy or bid on it at a sale or auction)—you have a fully impartial and totally unbiased preliminary study and assessment of the viability of doing so, conducted by us first. It makes good practical sense.

After nearing five decades of international experience in this highly specialised field, it's very clear to us that if your case does have the capacity to progress to a stage where it would be plausible and sensible to investigate and research the work much further, then you should do so to support an application of authenticity. This should be approached in a way that supplies us with as much information, clear-cut evidence, and well-prepared argument as possible to achieve. All in all, that means all avenues being properly scrutinised, absolutely confirmed as positive, and the case unquestionably being presented as reliable and sound.

By conducting such a study right at the start of the process, we would also then know exactly what has to be accomplished, including where, how, and why it needs to be investigated further, and importantly, what the possible value of the piece may be were it to be in the final analysis authenticated and correctly certified.

Treat such a study then as your personal safety net, and one that will in the long term save you a great deal of money and additional heartache if there are just too many obstacles to overcome and the project is likely to fail in any way. In that respect, then surely it would be veryunwise to even try.

Fees

Please note that this Preliminary Viability Study is subject to a modest set fee, reflecting the expert time and resources dedicated to providing you with this crucial initial assessment. The outcome of this study is always provided to you in a comprehensive, extensive written report, not just an email answer. Surely ou would not expect anything less from professionals in this expert field.
